Composers

Information for Composers

There are two ways we invite composers to work with Choralworks Inc.

The first is that each year we commission at least one new major choral work to be written and work with the composer to arrange a concert for the work to be premiered.

The second way we invite composers to work with us is to agree to publish and sell their choral compositions on our website.  We believe that many composers write music for their own, or other choirs and groups on request or commission, but do not publish their work.  Our website offers exposure to choirs and groups across the world.

COMMISSIONS

Choralworks Inc. sets guidelines for composers who undertake commissions.  The guidelines are not intended to impose limitations but are designed to encourage composers to think about the many choirs that exist in our community.
The Composer has license to create the commissioned composition using his own ideas.  However, the following guidelines have been set:
  • The work is to be not less than 30 minutes duration.
  • The essence of the contract is to produce new, contemporary choral music that focuses on the unique sound of a medium to large choir. The music will not depend on an orchestral accompaniment for effect.
  • The work is to be scored for choir/choirs preferably without solo parts.
  • The music must be accessible for community choirs to sing, but should be challenging enough to interest professional singing groups.
  • The lyrics should be contemporary, may be spiritual in nature but not taken from any standard religious text.

We believe that choirs need access to music that is "of our time" to be able to continue to attract new members to sing and to attract audiences to their concerts.  Today’s composers have a wide and rich range of music styles and genres to motivate and inspire them and we encourage them to draw on their experience and knowledge to create exciting new works.  Our guidelines state that the work must be focused on the unique sound of the choir.  We make this statement because we believe that community choirs want the challenge of new music but do not necessarily have access to, or have the finances to hire, an orchestra for a concert performance.

The accompaniment used for the premiere concert is a matter for discussion between the composer and Choralworks Inc.

After the commissioned work has been premiered, with the agreement of the composer, the work is published through the Choralworks Inc. website.

To work with us and be considered for a commission, please send a CV and an indication of past compositions and performances to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Remember that at the moment we can only commission one work each year.  The original donation of seeding money that we received has a limit!

PUBLISHING

There is an initial fee of $50 to pay to register and publish your works on our website.  There may be a small further charge if more works are added at a future time, depending on any resources needed to administer changes to the website.

At present, Choralworks Inc. has set the selling price for music at 20 cents per page, with a minimum number of copies per purchase.  The composer may decide on a different price.  The selling price is split with 50% going to the composer as royalties, the remaining 50% going to Choralworks Inc. to pay GST and other taxes and expenses related to operating and maintaining the website.  Choralworks Inc. expects to make a small profit on sales to help keep the organisation operating and allow more commissions to be made in the future.
