Do singers need to read music?

Singing is fun and it is not all about singing as a soloist. If you can clearly hear the music and sing in tune with the music, it is possible to have fun by joining a choir or singing group.

However, many people think that to be able to sing with a group you have to be able to “hit” the right note without help.  Most people need a guide and that is what the sheet music provides.  Reading music is like reading a map to reach a certain destination.   Listening to the sound of a particular note, reproduced by an instrument or a voice, and finding it on the music is like finding the “You are Here” point on the map.  Once that point on the map is found, you know in which direction to go and how far to go to reach your destination.  Identifying a note on the sheet music is the first step towards learning how to relate the

positions and timing of the different notes and to being able to reach your “destination” of reproducing the right sound and tune.  Of course, it is not absolutely necessary to learn to read music to sing with a group.  However, even having a little knowledge makes it much easier to reproduce the sound that the composer of the music intended.  The level of enjoyment of participating in making music is also increased. There are many people who can give you a basic understanding of the written language of music.  Let go of the fear that you can’t do it and try! Join a singing group and experience how people are willing to help you.

We do not have to be professional musicians to make music.  Anyone who wants to can have the uplifting experience of making music.

Are you a Composer?

How many composers do we have in our society today? Are we producing music that will not be recognised until after the composer is dead? In this time, when we have so much technology available to us, surely we can publish the music that our contemporary composers are publishing.
Every singer in a group that performs concerts regularly knows that to ensure we have an interesting repertoire, as well as a collection of much-loved well-known pieces, we often choose works written by relatively unknown composers from the past. Equally, almost every Music Director who runs a choir or singing group arranges or composes pieces for the group to sing. In many groups, there are singers who compose for the group. Are those pieces ever performed by other groups? Are those pieces ever published to a wider audience? Will those pieces have to wait for a couple of hundred years before somebody finds them and thinks they are worth performing? Surely we can publish those works now.
Choralworks Inc. has been set up as a not-for-profit organisation to enable composers to publish and sell their works and to encourage choirs and singing groups to be innovative in the way they choose their repertoire and perform their concerts. Our website is easy to use. Register as a composer and upload your own music. Visit:

Are you a singer?

Do you sing in a choir or group, love to sing the well-known favourites and love to undertake those big works written by Handel, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Verdi and Vivaldi and so on? Do you also wonder why we do not have equivalent modern works to sing? Of course, cost is one factor and Copyright is another. Contemporary works are available but buying the scores of new works and coping with the Copyright issues can be beyond the resources of a community group.

Choralworks Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation set up to encourage composers to write and publish new music and to enable singing groups to buy new works at a reasonable price. Choralworks Inc. aims to commission one new major work each year. Choralworks Inc. also has a website to publish and sell a range of new choral music. It is intended that the sale of music will supplement the private funding used to set up the organisation so that commissions can continue into the future. We need your help to make this a success.
